A-Rod or Tebow?

Here’s the question: Who would YOU rather be, A-Rod or Tebow?

I keep thinking about these two guys. Both of them are reviled by at least 50% of the sports world, which is roughly 50% of the population. Although Alex Rodriquez was recently reinstated. Both of them are essentially out. Out of their respective sports. On the bench. On the sidelines. Out on their ears. One for the past season. The other likely for keeps.

Bear in mind, I do not know either of these two guys. I’ve never met Tim Tebow and even though I did literally/physically bump in to Alex Rodriquez on the sidewalk in Aspen a few years ago, there was no formal introduction. Since he’s a lot taller than I am and weighs 100lbs more, he didn’t really flinch. Me: “Oh, Sorry”. A-Rod: “No problem”. He really never even looked at me, he just kinda looked over and above me into the distance as he spoke and walked away.a_560x375

Although I’m not a psychologist but seems both are kinda pathological in some respects. A-Rod a liar. Tebow an unwavering believer.

A-Rod lied to the public for years. Lied to himself even longer. Worse yet, he seemed to believe his own lies. I mean if your gonna lie, OK. But understand, admit to yourself and know – your lying. Don’t believe your own bullshit! Hello Lance Armstrong, whom I’ve actually met and had a fairly lengthy conversation with on two occasions. But that’s a story for another day.

Couple A-Rod’s dubious career post season numbers, complete arrogance and a whiny, smug manner, and people kinda start liking to dislike you. Sure he’s hit 654 home runs. A staggering number. I respect that talent. Certainly steroids and PED’s had a role in his accomplishment. I have no idea how you measure that impact. But no drug gives you talent. PED’s enhance your strength and lessen recovery time in the short term, which is in fact an edge, so the guy has a problem. PR is only a small part for A-Rod, it’s huge for MLB. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim v New York Yankees

Unfortunately A-Rod’s biggest problem can’t be solved with a pill or a needle. It’s his confidence. He’s insecure. He’s scared. It’s really that simple. Here’s a guy in the midst of a 10 year, $275M contract and he’s insecure? I don’t know how you fix that. Of course you have the chicken and egg thing going on here… Did he get the contract partly because of PED’s or did he start the PED’s because of the contract? I have no idea. I wasn’t there.

Now there’s Tim Tebow. By all accounts a nice man. A humble human being. Gives credit away to everyone around him for his success. Praises God. Wears his faith on his sleeve. A clean-cut, hard working, hard training, wouldn’t say shit if he had a mouthful kinda guy. C’mon now, forget what his critics say, he clearly has talent. They don’t give away Heisman Trophy’s. No one gets drafted into the NFL without talent. Not many people I know lead teams to division titles or win play-off games in overtime on the first play from scrimmage with a perfect spiral/straight strike over the middle to stun the defending Super Bowl Champions.

OK, he’s not Tom Brady or Peyton Manning or Joe Montana. There are only 3 of those guys. No matter, there are 32 teams in the NFL. It would appear to me at the very least, half of them – maybe even 20, could use a new quarterback. No Tim Tebow takers. None. He is toiling in obscurity doing college football analysis on ESPN’s SEC Network, a 4th-rate cable channel. I don’t get this. Tim Tebow IS a winner. He figures out a way to win. Tim Tebow is a leader. His team-mates rally around him. They follow him. They even defend him.

Tim Tebow demonstrated he’d work for the NFL minimum, around $550,000 a year, 2% of what A-Rod makes a year. Tebow has thick-skin, he’s not insecure and has a ton of confidence in who he is. He places his fate in the hands of God and doesn’t look back. The day he was cut by the New England Patriots at the end of the 2013 NFL pre-season, when ask by a reporter if he was worried about his future? He said, “I’m not worried about my future at all..” He said this calmly, without hesitation or arrogance and it certainly seemed he was not lying. I only wish I had that much confidence.foundation_3

Maybe Tebow is pathological like A-Rod in the sense he’s in denial? I don’t know. But I will say this, it’s the collective of NFL team owners who ARE insecure. In denial. No courage, thin skinned and ego driven. They would rather lose game after game, year after year, than sign a “winner” who wears his faith on his sleeve and stirs controversy in the press they don’t know how to defend. Don’t let me get started on the press. Talk about people who have never done anything. 98% of them have zero first hand, actual experience with what they talk about.tim-tebow-tebowing-909f3a12ada856cb1

In light of the recent NFL revelations, the organization could use a “jolt” of Tim Tebow right now. If I owned an NFL team and Tim Tebow could put my team in the headlines with politically incorrectness by “Tebowing” in the end-zone or praising God in press conferences. I’d take that hit all day long – and the “W”.
